In this piece, a young female, having birthed her first litter, starts down the rocky slope from her den, looking for the food she will need to care for her cubs. It is spring, the snow is rapidly melting, and a few alpine wildflowers are beginning to bloom. Suddenly, an unfamiliar noise stops her in mid-stride, and she focuses all her senses on identifying its source. Her muscular body is poised for defense or pursuit. Is this a danger to her cubs, or an opportunity to feed?
