Tiny Tools...for the Artist and Craftsperson. You know how handy those itsy-bitsy tools are for your delicate work? The picks, the pliers, the no-hands magnifiers, etc.? You know how hard they are to find? Not any more....Now you can e-mail Joy Greenfield and tell her what you need.

Margaret Janeese Brixey Flanagan is a member of the Cherokee tribe. Margaret has been drawing and creating art since the third grade but, it is her particular love of sculpting that is reflected so well in the life-like appearance of her dolls. When you look at the exquisite detail of each doll you may find it amazing and inspiring to learn that Margaret has been legally blind since she was a teenager. She has a 6 degree field of vision, from Retinitis Pigmentosa, a hereditary eye disease. The exceptional detail in each doll is created while using a bright magnifier light to help her see. The style and method that she uses to create each doll is self-taught and she learns something new each time she makes a baby. See Margaret’s online gallery.

ADULT CLASSES: Beginner to Intermediate classes
* HANDS-ON DESIGN: APPLYING FINE ART PRINCIPLES TO BEADWORK: Develop your innate creativity and create your own designs and patterns. Learn the principles of composition, color, design, layout and construction to create professional-quality originals in beadwork. Creativity, like other mental and physical skills, improves with exercise! In this class, students will learn to apply design principles from the fine arts to beadwork. The teacher has both a science and fine arts background, as well as extensive experience teaching beginners to use color and form with confidence. She has used these principles to create her own award-winning work, and shares her techniques and shortcuts with her students. Hands-on exercises and an informal atmosphere promote the confidence to release your "inner artist" and develop your own style. Topics covered by this class include Composition and Design, Working around "creative block", Handling "technical" problems, Color: A "fine arts" perspective, Themes: Evoking a Style or Mood from Primitive to Futuristic Motifs

* HAPPY ENDINGS: PROFESSIONAL FINISHES FOR ART JEWELRY: When you invest a lot of creative effort -- not to mention time and expensive materials-- in making a wearable work of art, you want it to be perfect in every way. Your work should look good coming and going -- would you put a fine oil painting with a cheap plastic frame?

Professional finishes use little effort to the finish a pleasing element of your overall design. The class covers four different techniques, as well as safety chains and adjustable closures: French wire (traditional for pearl and gem strands), Bead tips (also a traditional pearl strand finish), Cone and bell ends (for a little more pizzazz) , Beaded tabs (when your art demands attention). The "Happy Endings" kit is available in gold-fill or sterling silver in the Artist's Store. The tutorial is free with the kit, or may be ordered alone for $5. (example link: Endings).

SURREAL WILDLIFE PORTRAITS: Learn to combine realistic and stylized elements to create unique wildlife designs. This class is oriented toward beginners or intermediate -level beaders who have little experience with appliqué techniques. The depth and texture of the beaded portraits blend with abstract forms for styles from the whimsical to the dramatic. Students will be able to finish pieces as brooches, miniature display shields, or necklace centerpieces with a variety of fringing and embellishing techniques. (example link: My Fading Family: Cheetah)

* SEED BEAD ART: ANIMAL AND HUMAN PORTRAITS: Learn to create realistic portraits of animals and humans by "painting with beads". This technique allows artists to achieve depth, texture and color beyond painting or other flat media. Students in this class will learn principles of color and shading; perspective; and special effects (e.g., reproducing the texture of fur and hair, capturing an individual's expression). The portraits can be finished in display or wearable format in any size (example link: Lion in Winter).

* REALISTIC FLORAL ART IN SEED BEADS: Learn to design lifelike images of flowers by "painting with beads". This class offers techniques that allow you to create in beadwork the appeal of floral designs that everyone admires in paintings. Beadwork gives depth, texture and color beyond painting or other flat media. The artist teaches students to use color, shading, perspective, and special effects (textures of petals, stamens, leaves; floral bouquets; combining flowers and other images). The technique can be used in any size format the student prefers. (example link: Baby Face.)

* SHELL GAME - DESIGNING WITH NATURAL SHELLS AND GEMSTONES: Create original art using natural shells, gemstones and precious metals. You can design your own art with a natural shell centerpiece, embellished with gemstone beads and silver or gold. Shells and stones offer a wide range of colors for every taste. These elegant, yet easy pieces may be finished as a choker or longer style necklace, wall hanging, framed art or box. (example link: Spirit in the Maelstrom).

* FREEFORM DESIGN WITH GEMSTONE CABOCHONS AND BEADS: Cabochons and mineral specimens, especially freeform shapes, make spectacular centerpieces when combined with beadwork. In this class, we use them with bead appliqué to create beautiful medicine shields or pendants to wear or display. Go beyond basic beading around an oval cab -- learn to combine stones, natural minerals, pearls and beads to take your designs to a higher level. You will be encouraged to experiment to create original art to express your own unique style -- from subtle to wild. (example link: Trail of Tears)

* ART OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST COAST: The Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest Coast (from Oregon to southern Alaska) have produced some of the finest art of the New World. Although they are known for their painting and carving, their designs convert into beautiful beadwork. Learn the basic principles of this style of art, the meaning and origin of the various design forms, and the significance of each creature. You will learn to convert non-traditional animals into the Northwest Coast style, and how to create pure abstract images based on traditional designs. (example link: Sky Whale).

* = available as a PDF tutorial in the STORE.

ADULT CLASSES: Intermediate to Advanced
MASKS! MIXED MEDIA SCULPTURE IN BEADS & POLYMER CLAY: Create original and dramatic three-dimensional art by combining beadwork and polymer clay with other media. The variety of media encourages you to experiment and imagine. From miniatures to larger works, these techniques are especially adaptable to portraying fantasy and mythical subjects. The teacher will provide images of her own design for the students to select for sculpting and beading. (example link: Hopi Earth).

SILHOUETTE SCULPTURE IN SEED BEADS: Learn to create realistic, silhouette sculpture portraits of animals and humans. The sculptures use fine detail, surface texture, and edge effects to create a bas-relief figure that seems suspended in space. The artist teaches students principles of color and shading; perspective; and special effects (reproducing the texture of fur and hair, capturing an individual's expression). The sculptures can be finished for wear or display, or both, as the student chooses. (example link: Galvanic Reaction)

LECTURE PROGRAMS
AN ANCIENT ART REVISITED: The only way tradition can be carried on is to keep inventing new things" ... Robert Davidson, Haida artist. AnnieLaurie Burke is a nationally-recognized bead artist and teacher, best known for combining intricate seed bead portrait art with other media to create innovative work. Her beading technique evolved from the ancient appliqué techniques of her Native Canadian ancestors. While her art emphasizes the themes from Nature that were favored by her ancestors, she has adapted the old methods to a more contemporary and representational style, using fine arts principles of color, shading and perspective. She has blended elements from the old and the new to take the original art form to a new level. Her style has generated interest among traditionalists in both fine arts and Native arts, as well as contemporary collectors.
