SKY WHALE WEAVES THE RAINBOW
Whale effigy pin/pendant in the Pacific Northwest style, in seed beads, sterling and rainbow hematite

The whale is a favored symbol among the Northwest Coast people, who are renowned for weaving ceremonial blankets. When the weavers work, their fingers move faster than the eye can follow, braiding and twisting the colorful threads. When the spirit animals weave their blankets, they use threads of rainbow, and we see the swirling northern lights. The heart of the whale is a cabochon of rainbow hematite cut by the artist. This figure used traditional single-needle appliqué on deerskin, picot edging, Comanche stitch and 3-drop peyote stitch. The beads are Czech 11-0 seeds, 12-0 three-cuts and 13-0 charlottes, with Japanese 15-0 seeds in ceylon, AB, silver-lined and metallic finishes, and sterling 2 mm beads. The heart of the whale is a cabochon of rainbow hematite cut by the artist.
